History

Canyon View High School was established in 1997. We are located at 166 West 1925 North in Cedar City, Utah.  Our mascot is the Falcon, and our school colors are black, silver, teal, and Carolina blue. We have approximately 1,100 students in grades 9-12 and 50 faculty members. CVHS is in the Iron County School District and is currently a 4A school in Region 9.

The first principal of CVHS was Vicki Wilson. Steve Burton took over the helm in 2004. Jennifer Wood became principal in the fall of 2006 after serving two years as assistant principal. Kevin Pedersen was the assistant principal from 2006-2008. Rich Nielsen was hired as the assistant principal in August 2008 and as the principal in July 2010. Dennis Heaton became principal in the Fall of 2017 with Julie King, Assistant Principal, and Kyle Robinson as an Assistant Principal and Athletic Director.

Canyon View High Schools has outstanding sports programs. State championships have been won by the boys and girls basketball teams, the boys and girls water polo teams, the softball team, and the Talons drill team.

The CVHS band, orchestra, and choir programs, under the direction of David Jordan and Alex Byers, consistently receive superior ratings on both the region and state levels..

Spanish and German foreign language programs are strong at CVHS. Students won 1st place at the Southern Utah University foreign language fairs several years in a row.

The art students have been consistent in winning the first place trophies from the Hurricane High Fantasy Art and Art on the Mountain competitions. Student-made glass ornaments have hung on the National Christmas Tree. Our student artists have also been consitently chosen to participate in the state art show at the Springville Museum of Art.

Drama students have won 1st place in both region and state competitions. They have also placed in the top 4 schools at the SUU Shakespeare competition. The current drama teacher is Holly Barrick.

Career and Technical Education programs are excellent at CVHS. The FFA teams excel on the region, state, and national levels. Skills USA students have won competitions in electronics, drafting, woodworking, and 3D animation. FCCLA students have placed at state and national competitions. The Pro Start foods team has a 3A state title for food presentation. Business students in FBLA have recently competed in national FBLA events.

In the spring of 2014, Canyon View High School completed the accreditation process through the Utah State Office of Education and received the highest recommendation possible–a six-year accreditation with no interim visit. Again in 2017, The Utah AdvancED Council accepted the school’s report and granted continuation of the accreditation term with no findings or additional recommendations.

In the US News and World Report Best High Schools rankings, CVHS received a Silver Award in 2012 and a Bronze Award in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
